Several provisional marks for TAMUK on final day of 2023 Bearcat Invitational

Both the men's and women's 4x400m relay squads climbed the national leader board at the invite

MARYVILLE, Mo.- The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program wrapped up competition at the 2023 Bearcat Invitational on Saturday, with both the men's and women's 4x400m relay squads logging NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks at the Hughes Fieldhouse. 
 
The men's team, comprised of sophomore Ja'Qualon Scott, junior Bryson Dyer, freshman Tony Benitez, and junior Michael Samihamba, ran a blazing fast time of 3:13.59 to best Lincoln (Mo.) in a photo finish and claim the top spot. The team's time allows them to climb into seventh on the national leader board, placing them in prime position to qualify for the 2023 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championship.
 
Scott and Samihamba also logged Provos in the open 400m, with Scott clocking in at 48.01 for first place and the 11th-fastest time in the nation, while Samihamba finished fourth in 48.52 for 32nd among DII competitors. 
 
Scott's stellar day also saw him climb into fifth nationally in the 60 m hurdles, with the sophomore finishing in 7.85 for another first-place finish and the facility record. 
 
In the women's 4x400m relay, a squad featuring freshman Melanie Roland, sophomore Vitiana Robert, classmate Cynai Christopher, and junior Sophia Ramirez placed fourth while climbing into 16th nationally with a time of 3:49.81. 
 
Roland then placed third with a provisional mark of 56.42 in the open 400m, slotting her 20th on the DII performance list. Christopher and Robert competed in the event as well, with Christopher taking seventh at 57.73 and Robert eighth at 57.84. 
 
Meanwhile, in the triple jump, junior Jazmin Ray leapt to 11.20m (36-09) to climb into fourth, as newcomer Fakhreddine Benhadja collected seventh in the men's edition at 13.61m (44-08) 
 
Additionally, sophomore Cody Fountain placed fifth in the 800m with a time of 1:52.38.
