TAMUK takes two from Cameron for third-straight series win

The Javelinas took game one 6-0 before a 19-10 game two victory

LAWTON, Okla.- On Saturday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team won their third consecutive Lone Star Conference series as sophomore Luis Martinez tossed a complete-game shutout in a 6-0 game one victory before the squad picked up a 19-10 win in game two.

The Javelinas (10-7, 11-7 LSC) took two from the Aggies (3-13, 3-13 LSC), with Martinez going the distance in game one, while senior Steven Bonuz was electric on the day, logging six total hits with six RBIs.

Game One

After seven scoreless frames, Martinez (1-0) picked up the 6-0 win, while Clayton McClenan (1-2) was handed the loss. Martinez scattered three hits and struck out 13 batters, the most of any Javelina hurler since Logan Garza punched out 15 in 2021.

TAMUK got their first run of the ballgame in the top of the third, with junior Nick Wolff sparking a two-out rally on a base knock into right field. Shortly after, Bonuz plated Wolff in on a sharply hit single for a 1-0 Blue and Gold lead.

The Javelinas added two more to their total in the top of the fifth, with sophomore Dalton Kramer logging a leadoff single and scoring on a double by Wolff. Bonuz then smacked a double into right, bringing Wolff home.

Now up, 3-0, Kramer walked before denting the plate on a triple by Wolff in the seventh. Bonuz then scored Wolff for his third RBI of the contest. A redshirt junior Ivan Duarte single later in the frame allowed Bonuz to come around for a 6-0 edge.

The Aggies threatened in the bottom of the seventh, moving a runner into scoring position before Martinez clamped down, tossing a pair of strikeouts and inducing a fly out to end the ballgame.

Game Two

The Javelinas picked up a 19-10 win in game two, with sophomore Karson Shepard (1-0) picking up the win in relief and Evan Nichols (1-0) the loss.

Back-to-back singles by Kramer and Wolff opened the first before the pair moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Redshirt sophomore Hayden Johnson allowed Kramer to score on a deep sac-fly, as Wolff crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Bonuz for a 2-0 Javelina lead.

The Aggies answered, tying the contest in the bottom part of the inning before TAMUK took a 6-2 lead in the top of the third. Junior Michael Cervantes was plunked, swiped second, and scored on an Aggie miscue that allowed junior Garrett Thompson to get on base.

Thompson came around on a Wolff single, and Kramer was plunked prior to a Johnson single that pushed two across the plate.

Sophomore Robbie Spencer tossed a scoreless second, but the Aggies pushed one across in the third, cutting their deficit to three.

A sac-fly by Bonuz scored senior Colton Allen in the fourth, ahead of four Aggie runs in the bottom of the inning, for a 7-7 tie.

Thompson knocked in junior Jacob Rosales, who got on via a leadoff double for a run in the fifth, while Bonuz tripled in the sixth to plate Wolff before scoring himself on a passed ball that put his team up 10-7.

Allen picked up an RBI double in the top of the seventh prior to a trio of Aggie runs in the bottom of the inning.

With TAMUK holding a narrow 11-10 lead entering the eighth, the Javelina hitters busted the game wide-open, pushing seven across to go up 18-10. Back-to-back walks and a plunked batter loaded the bases, with four straight singles allowing five runs to score. A passed ball and a Duarte single then knocked in the final two runs of the inning, putting the Javelinas up eight.

A wild pitch in the top of the ninth allowed Thompson to dent the plate once more en route to the 19-10 final score. Additionally, freshman Marco Martinez threw the final 2.1 innings of the contest fanning two without allowing any hits.

The Javelinas will now meet Texas A&M-International for a nonconference matchup on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Laredo, ahead of a four-game Lone Star Conference series against UTPB beginning Friday at 6 p.m. inside the confines of Nolan Ryan Field.
