Javelinas take two on day two of Nick and Dee Herman Invitational

The Javelinas took down UMHB before claiming a 4-1 win over Corban

KINGSVILLE, Texas — On Friday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball program improved to 3-0 on the season, first besting Mary Hardin Baylor 5-0, before beating Corban 4-1 on day two of the Nick and Dee Herman Invitational at the Javelina Beach Courts. 

TAMUK vs. UMHB

The Javelinas cruised past the Cru, 5-0, with freshman Madelyn Wallace and junior Adrienne VanBrunt picking up a 21-9,21-7 win to open the contest as the No. 1 tandem. At the No. 2 spot, newcomer Rylan Pollard and junior Rylie Anderson topped their opponents, 21-15,21-17, before No. 5's Kalani Vasquez and Meghan Stiefer cemented the victory with a 21-10,21-13 performance.

The Javs also picked up wins on courts three and four, with freshman Olivia Zeigler and junior Grace Gettys routing the opposition 21-15,21-17, while freshman Taylor McCarthy and junior Jackie Alanis won 21-15,21-18, securing the sweep. 

Additionally, junior Caitlin Willson and newcomer Delaney Evans won the contest's extra match 21-10,21-13.

TAMUK vs. Corban 

The Javelinas remained perfect on the year after earning a 4-1 win over Corban that saw three courts reach a third and deciding set. 

TAMUK jumped out in front with a 21-19,21-11 win by Alanis and McCarthy, ahead of a 21-17, 21-16 triumph by Stiefer and Vasquez that put the squad one score away from victory. Gettys and Zeigler then took a 21-17 win in the opening set before falling 19-21 and claiming a 15-8 win in the third, resulting in a 3-0 Blue and Gold lead. 

After dropping the first frame 20-22, Wallace and VanBrunt bounced back 21-17, but the opposition persisted, scoring a point after a 15-11 deciding frame. 

Pollard and Anderson battled after losing the first set 15-21, winning 21-19 to force a third set. Following a marathon that saw the squads exchange blows throughout the stanza, the duo concluded the day with a 22-20 win for a 4-1 team score. 

The Javelinas also saw freshman Elizabeth Williams make her collegiate debut in the No. 6 spot, teaming up with Evans and going 22-20,21-23,15-11.

TAMUK will wrap up the Nick and Dee Herman Invitational on Saturday, facing Missouri Baptist at 9 a.m. before a senior day contest against Utah at 12:15 p.m. that will see Alanis and Gettys honored.
