KINGSVILLE, Texas – Javelina softball is set to begin Lonestar Conference play with a rematch of last season's South Central Regional in their home opener taking on the (#19) Rattlers of St. Mary's in a three-game series. The series will begin on Tuesday with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
The game marks the first LSC action for the team and for interim coach Orlando Salinas.
The Javelinas (3-5) head into their home opener after splitting a doubleheader against Our Lady of the Lake, last Sunday.
Kayla Gonzales, recorded three hits in six trips to the plate across the doubleheader including two home runs and four total RBIs. Gonzales also leads the team in slugging percentage with a mark of .792.
Jory Cervantes, leads the team at the plate with a batting average of .464 on the season with a team high 13 hits and two stolen bases.
In the circle, Beth Montes has thrown three complete game wins for the Javelinas including one against the Saints where the San Antonio native allowed only two runs on two hits. On the season, Montes has a team low ERA of 3.28 and a high of 24.2 innings pitched and 22 batters struck out.
SCOUTING THE #19 RATTLERS
The Rattlers (10-4, 1-2 LSC), started the season with a seven-game winning streak including a 5-4 win over then #13 Augustana and #8 Central Oklahoma in the first weekend of the season.
However, StMU comes to Kingsville having dropped two of its last three games in its LSC opening series against Eastern New Mexico.
Jamison Holder and Lauren Gonzales lead the Rattlers at the dish with batting averages of .375. Holder also leads the team with a slugging percentage of .600.
Madeline Bloom and Catalina Cavazos have shouldered the load in the circle this season being the only pitchers for the Rattlers averaging one inning per game.

After the series with the Rattlers, the Javs will hit the road for their longest road trip of the season, going to Silver City, N.M. to take on the Western New Mexico Rattlers.
