Javelinas headed to Lubbock for Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships

The meet will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program is en route to Lubbock, Texas, to participate in the 2023 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, which take place on Saturday and Sunday at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center. Competition on both days will begin at 10:30 a.m., with several Javelinas vying for a conference championship.

The men's 4x400m relay enters as the top seed after the quartet of sophomore Ja'Qualon Scott, junior Bryson Dyer, freshman Tony Benitez, and junior Michael Samihamba clocked in at 3:13.59 at the 2023 Bearcat Invite.

Scott also represents the favorite in the 60m hurdles, in which he holds a season-best of 7.85 while ranking second in the 400m with a 48.01 mark.

Also slotted first, junior Katryna Hernandez has tossed the league's-best shot put distance at 14.30m (46-11) and sits second in the weight throw after heaving the implement 15.09m (49-6.25).

Sophomore Thomas Nieto rounds out the top seeds as he looks to continue a stellar season that's seen a 5.35m (17-6.5) clearance at the FasTrak Indoor Collegiate Opener as well as three LSC Field Athlete of the Week awards. He leads a talented field that features graduate student Dean Wallace and junior Reid Barba, who enter tied for second at 4.91m (16-1.25).

Wallace figures to make an impact in several events, as the former LSC heptathlon champion ranks third in the multi-event, with a 5,231-point total from the Boo Rogers Combined Events, and is seeded third in the long jump at 6.98m (22-11).

The women's 4x400m relay squad enters as the third seed, with newcomer Melanie Roland, sophomore Vitiana Robert, junior Sophia Ramirez, and sophomore Cynai Christopher boasting a season-best time of 3:49.81. Roland also ranks second in the open 400m competition with a provisional qualifying time of 5.42.

In the men's shot put, graduate student D.J. Delancy sits second at 17.15m (56-3.25), and senior Marco Arevalo third with a 16.69m (54-9.25) toss after the pair had a stellar day at the Lenord Hilton Memorial Invitational in January.

Meanwhile, graduate student Stephen Cardenas is slotted third in the weight throw with a provisional mark of 18.47m (60-7.25) from the Houston Invitational.
