Javelinas wrap up regular season at Howie Ryan Invitational

The event was the final tuneup before the conference meet

Houston- In the final tuneup before the 2023 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program competed at the Howie Ryan Invitational inside the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday.

The Javelina jumpers had a stellar day that began with freshman Madison Ramos collecting an eighth-place finish in the high jump. She cleared a bar set at 1.60m (5-03) on her first attempt to tie for eighth with a trio of DI competitors.

Later, in the long jump, graduate student Dean Wallace collected third behind a professional and an athlete from Houston Christian as he leapt 6.98m (22-10.75) for a podium finish. He was joined by classmate Jordan Wilson in the competition, with Wilson using a 6.59m (21-07.50) mark to place eighth.

Sophomore Thomas Nieto saw his stellar campaign continue with a silver-medal performance in the pole vault. He surpassed 5.31m (17-05) to tie Alexander Slinkman of Rice for the top spot. However, Slinkman claimed first due to a jumpoff. Junior Reid Barba also competed in the event, placing seventh after a 4.86m (15-11.25) clearance.

The women's iteration saw junior Bianca Cardenas use a height of 3.30m (10-10) to place ninth, with classmate Ana Garcia not far behind in 11th with a mark of 3.15m (10-04).

The throwing program saw a slew of solid performances as well, with senior Marco Arevalo placing second in the shot put at 16.37m (53-08.50), while sophomore Garrett Burns took eighth in the event at 15.10m (49-06.50).

Shortly after, in the weight throw, graduate student Stephen Cardenas collected a seventh-place finish thanks to a toss of 17.66m (57-11.25).

On the track, sophomore Ja'Qualon Scott's dominance continued as he clocked in at 8.03 to place fourth in the 60 m hurdles. Scott also teamed up with junior Bryson Dyer, classmate Sterling Riles, and junior Preston Rabe for the men's 4x400m relay, with the squad narrowly edging out HCU to place fourth at 3:20.81.

The women's 4x400m relay squad performed well, as freshman Zoe Brown, classmate Amber Gonzalez, newcomer Jazmine Miller, and sophomore Cynai Christopher finished eighth with a time of 4:04.95 in a crowded field that saw seven Division I programs compete.

Christopher also placed 13th, thanks to a time of 25.42 in the 200 m dash, while Gonzalez took 15th in the open 400 m at 1:00.44.

The Javelinas will now focus on the league meet, which begins Thursday at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas.
