Javelinas travel to Colorado for final LSC-RMAC match-ups

The team is on the road for the last time before their home opener

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team is on the road once again as they head to the Rocky Mountains to take on Colorado Mesa and Western Colorado this weekend. It will be a late weekend for the Hogs as their first matchup will be against Mavericks of Colorado Mesa (1-1, RMAC 0-0) on Friday, Nov. 17 with tip-off set for 8 p.m CT. Then, on Saturday, Nov. 18, the squad makes the drive over to Gunnison, CO for a 9 p.m. CT tip-off against the Mountaineers of Western Colorado (1-1, RMAC 0-0).

The Javelinas (1-1, LSC 0-0) are coming off a 1-1 weekend on the road the week before. The squad opened the season with a 54-49 win over South Dakota Mines in a defensive battle before falling to a red-hot shooting Chadron State team, 70-109, the next day.

C.J. Smith led the scoring for the Javs their last time, scoring 26 points over the two games while also nabbing seven rebounds and four assist. Smith also came away with three steals. Dillon Gooding was close behind, collecting 20 points of his own including shooting 9-of-12 from the free throw line. 

Kavon Booker was a force on the boards for the Javelinas, grabbing 17 total rebounds (four offensive, 13 defensive) and also adding in four assists of his own alongside two blocks. He also totaled 13 points over the weekend, including going 7 points from the charity stripe.

The Hogs are 0-2 all-time against CMU and 2-0 against WCU.

SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS

CMU is coming off of a 1-1 weekend as well, dropping their opener to Dallas Baptist, 84-89, then picking up the win against St. Edwards, 89-73.

The Mavericks shot 49.6 percent from the field last weekend, including 24-of-58 from behind the arc. 

They have been about even with their opponents on rebounding, holding a narrow overall advantage at 65 to 64.

CMU dished out 25 assists their last times out while snagging 23 steals of their own.

The Mavericks have four scorers with more than 20 points in their last two games, including three (Trevor Baskin, Isaac Jessup, Mac Riniker) with 30 or more.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS

WCU comes into the weekend 1-1 also. The squeezed out a narrow victory over UT Tyler, 59-57, in their home opener before dropping their next game against West Texas A&M, 48-71.

The Mountaineers are shooting 35 percent from the field so far but nearly 45 percent from three point range, going 13-of-29.

They have had problems keeping control of the ball, losing 39 turnovers - 14 more than their opponents.

No Mountaineer has more than 20 points after two games, but five have at least double-digits with two more sitting at nine.
