Javelinas headed to Space City for Houston Invitational

The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, with the men’s and women’s high jump

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program will be back in action on Friday as they return to the Yeoman Fieldhouse for the 2023 Houston Invitational on the campus of Houston.

The competition will begin at 11 a.m., with the high jump marking the inaugural field event, ahead of running events which start at 3:30 p.m. with the DMR.

The men's team enters as the No. 15 team in the nation, following a pair of stellar performances by Thomas Nieto and Ja'Qualon Scott that saw the pair claim LSC Athlete of the Week honors. Additionally, junior Katryna Hernandez won the female Field Athlete of the Week accolades for her weight throw and shot put accomplishments.

Nieto logged the nations-best mark in the pole vault at 5.35m (17-6.5) at last weeks Fastrak Atheltix Collegiate Opener, allowing him to take second and receive the male Field Athlete of the Week honor. Scott was awarded the track iteration after running a blazing fast 60m hurdle time of 7.89, the fifth-best of the indoor season.

Hernandez meanwhile doubled in the weight throw and shot put, placing first in both events at the Yeoman Fieldhouse with a 13.30m (43-7.75) heave in the shot put and a 14.95m (49-0.75) toss in the weight throw.

The Javelinas will be joined by a wealth of top talent, including a slew of professional athletes, as well as NCAA Division I programs in Houston, Texas State, Sam Houston State, Rice, UTSA, ULM, Lamar, Louisiana, Houston Christian, Lamar, and Prairie View A&M. TAMUK is the only Division II program to receive an invitation to the event.
