KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team is set to resume the Lone Star Conference schedule as they welcome Arkansas-Fort Smith into the Steinke Physical Education Center on Friday at 6 p.m. before hosting Oklahoma Christian Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Javelinas (9-6, 1-1 LSC) took a break from conference play last week, picking up in-region wins over Chadron State and Texas A&M International. First, the Javs swept the Eagles before mounting a come-from-behind five-set win over the Dustdevils.
Sophomores Ayanna Jackson and Sydney Whitmire assisted in the pair of wins and were recognized by the Lone Star Conference, with Jackson taking home Offensive Player of the Week honorees while Whitmire was named Setter of the Week. Jackson finished the week with 43 kills at a .463 percent clip, and 11 kills as Whitmire dished out 53 helpers.
The Lions (9-6, 3-1 LSC) split contests against OC and Western New Mexico, dropping a five-set matchup against the Eagles and sweeping the Mustangs. A large part of the UAFS offense comes courtesy of Reagan Macha, who leads the teams in kills averaging 2.74 kills per set and boasting 20 service aces. The Lions rank third in the LSC with 1.72 aces as a team. Lauren Weber and Chloe Price have played integral roles early in the season, with Weber pacing the team in digs at 272 while Price sits fourth in the LSC with 9.63 assists per set.
The Eagles (11-6, 3-2 LSC) had a busy week, playing four games in seven days and picking up a trio of wins over UAFS, East Central, and Western New Mexico before falling to TAMIU in straight sets on Tuesday. TAMUK met OC earlier in the year at the LSC Crossover Tournament; the Eagles, however, got the better of the Javs with solid performances by Wendy Cobbah and Sydney Collins, helping the opposition to victory. Additionally, the Eagle's defense has been the best in the LSC thus far as they lead in blocks per set with 2.57 and total digs with 1,161.
