3-0, Javelinas set take on ENMU Greyhounds

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville (3-0, LSC 1-0) Football returns to Javelina Stadium this Saturday, Sept. 24 as they take on Lone Star Conference foe Eastern New Mexico (1-2, 0-1) at 7 p.m. apart of Family weekend here at TAMUK.

The Javelinas come into Saturday following last week's road upset win of then No. 14 West Texas A&M which marked TAMUK's first win over the Buffs in four years, and the first program win over a ranked opponent since 2012.

"There's a lot of energy and buzz around us and around campus," said head coach Mike Salinas. "Our focus though is to go out and execute and play clean ball with the 1-0 mentality we've had all season."

The Hogs enter week four of the season undefeated for the first time in over a decade bolstered by a stout defense that ranks second in all of Division II in total defense, and a rushing attack led by Christian Anderson who leads the LSC and ranks fourth nationally in rushing touchdowns with four so far on the season.

Special teams have also shined for the Javelinas as they have blocked a conference-best three kicks, one punt, and also lead the conference in yards per kickoff return with 35.85.

"Special teams is something we focus heavily on throughout the week," said Salinas. "It's a third of the game and one we take a lot of time in perfecting and something we take pride in doing well as a team."

LAST TIME OUT
The Javelinas opened up LSC play last week with a 31-24 win over No.14 West Texas A&M last week.

In a tight, back-and-forth affair, the Javelinas broke through early in the fourth quarter, as tight end Allen Arclies dragged multiple Buffalo defenders over the goal line to give the Javelinas what would be the game-winning touchdown.

The defense forced a total of six turnovers in the win, including two from defensive back Isaiah Jacobs who sealed the victory with his second interception to end chances of a Buffs comeback late in the fourth quarter.

LSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
The Javelinas swept the LSC Player of the Week honors this week for the first time in program history.

Running back Christian Anderson earned the honor of Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Javelinas with 155 rushing yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry while tacking on two touchdowns including a 32-yard touchdown run in the third quarter of the win.

Isaiah Jacobs was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week following, two crucial interceptions and five tackles that he recorded in the win.

Finally, kicker Gilbert Garza was named the LSC's Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his career. The redshirt sophomore from Weslaco drilled a career-best 52-yard field goal in the Javelinas' 31-24 victory over West Texas A&M.  He added four extra points for seven kicking points.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
The Greyhounds come into this Saturday's matchup with a 1-2 overall record following a 41-6 loss to Division I opponent Tarleton State last week, but show plenty of promise and talent to challenge the Hogs.

"They are a good sound football team," said Salinas. "They execute well in a lot of areas, and just like anytime you play someone in this conference you have to be ready to play a really good team because that's who makes up this conference."

One player to watch on the greyhounds is wide receiver Asa Wondeh who leads the LSC in touchdown receptions and total receiving yards.

Next week, the Javelinas head back on the road to take on LSC affiliate member Simon Fraser in Blaine, Washington on Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. (CT).
