KINGSVILLE, Texas- On Sunday, The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team fell 19-6, in a rubber match finale against the UT Tyler Patriots in the opening round of the 2022 Lone Star Conference Baseball Tournament at Nolan Ryan Field.
The No. 4 seed Javelinas (31-18, 28-16 LSC) were bested by the No. 5 seed Patriots (31-20, 29-19 LSC), eliminating TAMUK from the LSC tournament. The Hogs now await their NCAA postseason fate as they entered the week under consideration as the third-ranked team in the South Central Region.
TAMUK plated six runs on 15 hits, with sophomore
Ramsey Amador (El Paso, Texas) going 3-for-4 and picking up two RBIs, while the sophomore trio of
Jake Chapman (Boerne, Texas),
Ivan Duarte (Juarez, Mexico), and
Matthew Castro (Corpus Christi, Texas) each logged two hits.
The Patriots struck first, putting four runs on the board in the top of the first, on a pair of two-run home runs.
The Javelinas got two back in the bottom of the frame, with senior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) legging out a double, before scoring on a UTT miscue. Duarte then plated Chapman on a sharply hit single through the right side for a 4-2 score line entering the second.
UTT batted around in the second and putting nine runs on the board to take an 11-run lead.
The Javelinas scored one in the fourth, with sophomore
Garrett Thompson (New Braunsfels, Texas) picking up an RBI after back-to-back singles by Castro and Amador, before the club added three more in the fifth, beginning with a sophomore
Nick Wolff (Klein, Texas) solo home run. Shortly after, Duarte singled, and two batters were plunked, setting the table for Amador, who scored two on base knocks.
Sophomore
Hunter Kloesell (Shiner, Texas) kept the Patriots off the board for three straight innings, striking out one and scattering a pair of hits,
With the score 13-6 entering the sixth, another UT Tyler home run put the Patriots up by eight before they added two in the eighth and three in the ninth, totaling 19.
The Javelinas will find out their fate on Sunday, May 15 with the selection show scheduled for 9 p.m., C.T.
