LAWTON, Okla. – Facing off against the No. 6 Cameron Aggies, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team suffered 7-0 defeat on Friday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex in Lawton, Okla.
The Javelinas are now 7-9 on the season and 2-3 in the LSC, while CU is 14-2 overall and 4-0 in conference competition.
In doubles play, TAMUK's No. 3 pairing of sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and freshman Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy) collected a 6-3 win, their seventh in their last 10 matches together. Unfortunately for the Javs, the No. 1 and No. 2 matches were claimed by the Aggies, 6-3 and 6-2.
Each match in singles play included at least one set that was decided by just two games, but the Aggies came out on top in each one. CU started singles by collecting the sixth, third and fourth flights to clinch the match. Turolo nearly captured the second stanza at No. 6, but that match finished 6-1, 7-5 while sophomores Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) were only narrowly defeated in the third and fourth contests, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-3 respectively.
The first flight was another ended in another close loss, as junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision and sophomore Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) also battled in the No. 5 flight, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 7-5. In the second flight, Maier evened the match by taking the second set, 6-4, but couldn't find a way to win the final frame in 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 defeat.
