Lions no match for Javelinas in 6-1 TAMUK win

Javs end final regular season road trip with a victory

FORT SMITH, Ark. – The final regular season road trip of 2022 for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team ended with a 6-1 victory over the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at the Fort Smith Athletic Club in Fort Smith, Ark.

This victory evens TAMUK's conference record at 3-3 and they're 8-9 overall. UAFS is 0-6 in league play and 1-11 for the season.

"It was a new day for everyone on the court today," said coach Autumn Wollenzien. "We needed to show resilience today and they responded well."

The day began with three doubles matches and sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy) got the Javs started on the right foot by winning the second flight, 6-2, their team-best ninth victory of the season together. Sophomores Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) and Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) then secured their team's first point of the by taking the third flight, 6-4.

The first Blue and Gold singles point came from ter Morsche, who dominated the No. 4 match, 6-1, 6-0 for her eighth win in her last 10 matches. Maier improved to 9-1 in her last 10 singles matchups by triumphing, 6-3, 6-3 in the second flight. The 11 victories both players have recorded to this point in the year are more than any Javelina posted in 2021.

The No. 5 contest belonged to Turolo by a score of 6-3, 6-3 and sophomore Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) collected the third match, 6-3, 6-4. TAMUK's win was closed out by junior Viktoriia Grigoreva (Tver, Russia), who bounced back after dropping the first set to conquer the sixth flight, 1-6, 7-6 (12-0), 10-6. Grigoreva is still undefeated in singles play in 2022 with a 6-0 record.
