INDIANAPOLIS – The first NCAA softball regional rankings of 2022 were released on Wednesday and the No. 5 Texas A&M-Kingsville softball is in the No. 3 spot out of 10 squads in the South Central Region.
The Javelinas have compiled a record of 37-8 so far in 2022 and they're 17-7 in the Lone Star Conference. They're attempting to earn their sixth berth in the national postseason and reach their third consecutive NCAA Tournament, which would be a first for the program.
Among the other schools in the regional rankings are seven other LSC schools, with UT Tyler at No. 1 and Lubbock Christian at No. 2. Right behind the Javs in fourth is Oklahoma Christian, followed by Angelo State in fifth, Texas A&M-Commerce in sixth and West Texas A&M in seventh. Rounding out the top eight is the final LSC school, the St. Mary's Rattlers, followed by two members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Colorado Mesa in ninth and Colorado Christian in 10th.
The regional rankings help the NCAA determine which teams will be selected to NCAA Tournament, set to begin on May 12th. The eight-team field in the South Central region will include automatic bids to the teams that win the Lone Star Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournaments and six at-large choices. The teams selected will then be split into two regional tournaments hosted by the top two seeds, followed by a super regional series to determine the region's representative in the College World Series.
