Excellent play in doubles and singles propels Javelinas past No. 45 Patriots

TAMUK posts 6-1 victory for second conference win

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team earned a point in doubles play, then dominated in singles action to earn a 6-1 victory over the No. 45 DBU Patriots in Lone Star Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Javelina Tennis Courts in Kingsville, Texas.

This represents the highest ranked opponent the Javs have defeated since they topped No. 35 St. Mary's on April 17, 2019. TAMUK's record is now 7-8 for the season and 2-2 in LSC play, while DBU is 13-8 overall and 3-3 in league play.

The doubles portion of the match started with DBU taking the third flight, but the Javelinas' answer came from sophomores Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands), who won the No. 2 match, 6-4. Junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and sophomore Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) then battled their way to a 7-5 victory in the No. 1 flight that got the Javs on the board first.

Sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) quickly added to her team's score in singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph that represents her eighth straight win. The fifth flight went to ter Morsche by a 6-2, 6-1 score and Zaffar also came out on top at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3. For ter Morsche, this win stands as her seventh straight victory, a career-best that surpasses a run of six-in-a-row she put together at the end of 2021.

The Javs tacked on a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the third flight, courtesy of Sante and finished their 6-1 win when freshman Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Fruili, Italy) came away with a 7-5, 6-2 decision in the No. 5 match.

The Javelinas will try to keep this momentum going on Friday, when they'll play the Cameron Aggies at 12 p.m. To keep up with Javelina tennis throughout the season, follow @JavelinaTennis on Twitter and Instagram, like the Javelina Sports Facebook page, subscribe to the Javelina Athletics YouTube channel and visit Javelinaathletics.com.
