KINGSVILLE, Texas – In a match that went down to the final point, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team went toe-to-toe with the No. 21 Midwestern Mustangs, but fell just short, suffering a 4-3 defeat on Friday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at the Javelina Tennis Courts in Kingsville, Texas.
The Javelinas are now 6-8 overall in 1-2 in conference in 2022, while MSU ups their record to 16-4 and 4-0 in LSC play.
The Mustangs took the match's first lead by winning all three doubles matches, taking the second flight, 6-1, followed by a 6-2 final at No. 3 and 6-3 decision in the No. 1 match.
In singles play, MSU added two more points to their tally by collecting the first and fourth flights, but sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) got the Javelinas on the board by dominating the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1. This victory pushed Maier's win streak to seven-in-a-row, the longest by a Javelina since Julia Rauer won 10-in-a-row in 2019.
Sophomore Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) added to TAMUK's tally by collecting No. 5 match, 7-5, 6-2 and sophomore Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) battled her way to a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3.
The deciding point came from the sixth flight, where freshman Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy) dropped the first set, but came back to win the second. Unfortunately for the Javs, a hotly contested third frame was won by MSU for a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3) final.
The Javelinas will be back on the court on Saturday for an 11 a.m. match against No. 45 DBU.
