KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team didn't drop a single set and scored a 7-0 victory in their first Lone Star Conference match of the season on Wednesday, dropping the UT Permian Basin Falcons at the Javelina Tennis Courts in Kingsville, Texas.
The Javelinas have won back-to-back matches and are now 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the LSC, the fourth time in the last five years TAMUK has opened its conference slate with a win. UTPB is 2-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Javs started the match by taking all three doubles matchups, the first time they've achieved that in 2022. Sophomores Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) took the second flight, 6-1, and sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and junior Viktoriia Grigoreva (Tver, Russia) locked up the No. 3 match, 6-2. The top flight went to junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and sophomore Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) by a score of 6-3.
Sante and Maier got the Javs off to a quick start in the singles matches, with Maier coming away with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Sante collecting the third flight, 6-0, 6-2. TAMUK clinched the match when Zaffar defeated Krystal Smith in the fourth flight, 6-1, 6-4.
The fifth point was provided by ter Morsche in the fifth match, 6-3, 7-5 and Grigoreva topped Mokina Cantu, 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 6 contest for her fifth consecutive victory. Donkor then finished off her team's win, 7-6, 6-4 in the first flight.
