Strong singles play propels Javelinas past Panthers

TAMUK snaps a three-match skid, moves back to .500

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Five different Javelinas triumphed in singles play and the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team ended a three-match losing streak by dropping the Prairie A&M Panthers by a score of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in Prairie View, Texas.

This victory evens TAMUK's 2022 record at 4-4 while the Panthers are 4-13.

"It was good to come away with a win today," said coach Autumn Wollenzien. "Everyone fought hard to get a W."

The Javelinas managed to win the third flight in the doubles portion by a score of 6-3, courtesy of sophomore Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) and freshman Manuela Turolo (Cividale Del Friuli, Italy), but the Panthers took the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, 6-4 and 7-6 respectively, to capture the first point of the day.

While the PVAMU did also manage to collect the top flight in singles play, the rest of the match was all Javelinas. Sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) cruised to a win in the second flight, 6-0, 6-1, her second victory in TAMUK's last three matches. Sante and sophomore Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) also won in straight sets and by identical scores of 6-4, 6-4 to lock up the third and fourth flights for the Blue and Gold. This represented the fourth win of the fall for Sante and the second for Zaffar.

Both the fifth and sixth flights needed a third set before the winner could be decided, but Turolo and sophomore Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) each found a way to come out on top. At No. 5, ter Morsche was beaten in the first set, but rebounded by taking the next one 6-2 and kept that momentum going into the final frame, where she secured the flight for the Javs, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Similarly, Turolo suffered a narrow defeat in her match, but then stormed back to win the second 6-4. The freshman from Italy outlasted her opponent in the third to finish the match with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 final that put the last point on TAMUK's victory.

The Javelinas play their first match at home on Wednesday, taking on UT Permian Basin at 3 p.m. To keep up with Javelina tennis throughout the season, follow @JavelinaTennis on Twitter and Instagram, like the Javelina Sports Facebook page, subscribe to the Javelina Athletics YouTube channel and visit Javelinaathletics.com.
