Offensive onslaught powers Javelinas to sweep of Falcons

TAMUK pours it on in 14-0 and 11-3 wins

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Sophomore Kayla Gonzales (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Matisen Onofrei (Mesa, Ariz.) combined to drive in 11 runs as the No. 15 Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team breezed past the UT Permian Falcons in a doubleheader by scores of 14-0 and 11-3 in Lone Star Conference action on Friday evening at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field in Kingsville, Texas.

"I thought our approach was really good at the plate," said coach Craig Nicholson. "We were a little more committed to taking the ball the other way. We still pulled the ball and got some pitches we could turn on a little bit, but I thought we did a good job of using the whole field. I thought the top of our order did a good job of table setting, stealing bases and putting the middle of our order in really good positions to be productive."

These two wins improved the Javelinas' record to 26-5 and they're 10-4 in LSC action. UTPB is 3-11 in league play and 16-19 overall.

GAME ONE

The Blue and Gold offense didn't waste any time going to work, starting the fireworks in the very first inning when Onofrei hit a rocket over the wall in left-center for two-run homer. Just those runs would've been enough for starting pitcher Beth Montes (San Antonio, Texas), who befuddled the Falcons over five scoreless innings. While picking up her 10th win of the year, Montes permitted only three singles, walked one and struck out six.

The floodgates opened in the third, which started with a single and an error putting two on for Gonzales. The sophomore from San Antonio smacked a two-run double off the wall in right-center and a bunt hit courtesy of senior Kaylee Dietrich (Phoenix, Ariz.) tallied the night's sixth run. Sophomore Natalie Rodriguez (Edinburg, Texas) and freshman Rylee Oborski (Salado, Texas) each added RBI singles and senior Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas) tacked on the inning's final run with an RBI knock of her own.

Another TAMUK rally was started in the fourth by Onofrei's second two-run dinger of the day and Oborski logged her second RBI later in the frame with her third hit of the contest. Senior Jennifer Giesey  (Crystal Lake, Ill.) kept the rally rolling with a two RBI double and sophomore Anissa Lechner (McKinney, Texas) capped the scoring with base hit that scored classmate Autumn Jones (Watauga, Texas).

GAME TWO

It was the visitors who broke the ice in the second game thanks to an RBI single in the first inning, but groundout by Onofrei that plated Kelly tied the game in the bottom of the inning. One inning later, a wild pitch brought in pinch-runner Sarah Montes (San Antonio, Texas) and TAMUK soon loaded the bases with nobody out. Kelly made the score 3-1 by beating out an infield hit and a UTPB error two batters later cleared the bases to push the Javs' lead to 6-1.

Giesey got the scoring started in the third win a run-scoring two-bagger and she later came across on an error to increase the margin to seven. Doubles from Dietrich and Rodriguez brought in the Javs' ninth run. Gonzales and freshman Aaliyah Ortiz (San Antonio, Texas) drove in the day's last two runs with RBI singles in the fifth.

Sophomore Lizette del Angel (Robstown, Texas) improved her record to 5-1 by holding UTPB to two earned runs in five innings. She didn't walk a batter and collected three strikeouts.
