Javelinas unable to complete comeback against Cameron

TAMUK fell to CU 74-68, despite outscoring the Aggies in the second-half

LAWTON, Okla. – A dominant second-half performance by the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team wasn't enough to overcome the Cameron Aggies, as the Javelinas fell 74-68 in Lone Star Conference action at the Aggie Gym on Saturday.

The Javelinas (17-10, 10-6 LSC) were defeated by the Aggies (16-10, 11-5 LSC) in the final matchup of the regular season. Both teams have earned a berth into the LSC tournament, with TAMUK set to host Texas A&M International on Tuesday in the Steinke Physical Education Center at 7 p.m.

Sophomore Georgia Ohiaeri (Las Vegas, Nevada) set a new career-high in points scored for the third time this season, as the Bishop Gorman product led the contest with 24. Ohiaeri was incredibly efficient from the floor, shooting 64.3%, with nine made baskets. Additionally, she finished one rebound shy of a double-double, while picking up a block and an assist against the Aggies.

Ohiaeri wasn't the only Blue and Gold athlete to reach double-digit scoring figures as classmate Krsylyn Jones (Edmond, Oklahoma) poured in 17 points while snagging five boards and logging five assists. Junior Brianna Pena (Weslaco, Texas) had a solid day in the Sooner State, leading the game in assists with seven while scoring nine points, as senior Anastacia Mickens (Beaumont, Texas) performed well on both ends of the floor, scoring eight, with four blocks and three steals.

The Aggies outscored the Javelinas 17-2 in the first quarter, with Mickens scoring TAMUK's only bucket on a free-throw line jumper with 11 seconds left in the frame.

A much tighter second quarter saw the Javs offense awaken, with each team matching each other shot for shot, as Pena, Ohiaeri, and junior Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas) all hit triples, resulting in a 14-point Aggie lead as they headed into the locker room up 33-19.

CU logged five of the first seven points in the third before Ohiaeri sparked a 12-1 Blue and Gold run, adding eight points to her total in less than three minutes on the court while trimming the Aggie lead down to four. Following a trio of Aggie free throws, Ohiaeri then buried a three-pointer before a pair of layups by Jones that resulted in a 44-42 score line favoring Cameron. The Aggies hit a triple of their own before the teams traded buckets, heading in the fourth with the Javelinas down 54-51.

Cameron managed to keep the Javs at arm's length throughout the final frame with a Magian Hedge three-pointer, sealing a 74-68 victory for the Aggies.
