Javelinas fall to Pioneers

The Javelinas finish 12-1 inside the SPEC

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team fell to the Texas Woman's Pioneers 75-70, on Saturday, in Lone Star Conference play at the Steinke Physical Education Center.

The Javelinas (17-8, 8-10-4 LSC) were defeated by the Pioneers (16-7, 9-3 LSC), suffering their first home loss of the season, despite four student-athletes recording double-digit scoring figures.

Junior Kryslyn Jones (Edmond, Oklahoma) led the Javs in points, shooting 50% from the floor, scoring 15 points and snagging a steal. Freshman Mia Rivers (College Station, Texas) finished one rebound shy of a double-double, logging nine boards while scoring 14 with six assists. Additionally, sophomore Georgia Ohiaeri (Las Vegas, Nevada) logged 13 points in just 11 minutes of action, with freshman Janessa Payne (Aledo, Texas) not far behind scoring 11.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead outscoring the Javs 23-15 in the first quarter. TAMUK found themselves down 31-16 in the second before a 13-0 run featuring multiple buckets by Rivers, and junior Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas) evened the game at 31 apiece. Payne polished off a pair of free throws in the final minute of the half, handing the Javs a one-point edge heading into the locker room.

The slugfest continued throughout the third quarter with neither team able to extend their lead past four; as a 52-50 score line in favor of the Pioneers kicked off the final frame, Payne nailed a three-pointer to begin the fourth, with the teams continuing to trade blows until a nine-point TWU run resulted in a 72-63 lead. Rivers hit a layup to pull within two but under 30 seconds but clutch free throws by Sadie Moyer secured the Pioneer victory.

The Javelinas will hit the road next week as they visit Canyon, Texas, for a showdown against West Texas on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., before facing off against Cameron on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the regular season's finale.
