KINGSVILLE, Texas – The final home weekend of the regular season in on tap for the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team and their schedule for these final two home games starts with a Thursday night collision with the Midwestern State Mustangs scheduled for 7:30 p.m., then concludes on Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest against the DBU Patriots. Both games will be held inside the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.
Before Sunday's game, the Javelinas will hold their Senior Day ceremony for Tre Flowers (Bryan, Texas) and Dayante McClellan (Austin, Texas), both of whom will be playing in their final regular season games at the SPEC.
Both players arrived in Kingsville prior to the start of the 2019-20 season and made an enormous impact on a Javelina squad that posted a 21-9 record and set a program-best with 16 conference victories.
McClellan finished as the team leader in field goal percentage, tied for the team lead in blocked shots and was one of TAMUK's top rebounders. Flowers made the All-LSC Second-Team, finished second on the team in scoring and his 59 made three-pointers are tied the for the ninth-most by a Javelina in a single season. He followed that up with another all-conference campaign in 2020-21, the first TAMUK player in more than a decade to be all-league in consecutive years.
Since McClellan and Flowers arrived in 2019, the Javelinas have won 48 games and are 29-6 at home.
By notching a 77-69 road victory over the UT Permian Basin Falcons on Saturday, the Javelinas moved to just a game out of the 12th and final Lone Star Conference Tournament spot. In order to garner a spot in the postseason, the Hogs will need to find a way to pass Oklahoma Christian and Texas A&M International, both of whom will also be playing their final regular season home games on Thursday and Saturday.
To give themselves a chance to jump into the postseason party, the Javs will need to deal with two of the LSC's hottest teams. The Mustangs have won three-in-a-row and four of their last five, a stretch that started with an overtime victory over then-No. 12 West Texas A&M on Jan. 27th. The Patriots have taken 12 of their last 14 contests and they bring with them a defense that averages forcing 16.3 turnovers per game, the most in the LSC.
The Patriots will be looking for their first-ever win over the Javelinas in Kingsville, having dropped their only previous meeting at the SPEC. MSU's last triumph in Kingsville came in December of 2017, but the Mustangs still own a 38-14 edge in the all-time series.
