PITTSBURG, Kan. - The indoor track and field season began with a bang today in Kansas, as junior Jezell Shows broke her own school record in the indoor pentathlon at the Boo Rogers Invitational.
Shows', new record is set at 3,053 total points breaking her previous record of 3,042 that she set at the 2022 Washburn Open. The performance is a repeat of history as the junior broke the previous record at the same meet last season.
"Today was a great day. About as much as you can ask for in a first meet," said head coach Ryan Dall. "We had a lot of individual personal bests and Jezell set a new school record so I was very happy with the performances. I'm looking forward to tomorrow with the finish of the men's heptathlon and the individuals we have competing."
On the men's side, graduate student Dean Wallace opened the 2022-23 indoor season with a strong performance in the men's heptathlon scoring a total of 2,900 on day one of competition which sees him sitting sixth overall.
Wallace, brought in his biggest haul of points in the 60 meter dash where the Geronimo, Texas native ran a personal best 7.09 for a total of 851 points. Wallace would also set a new personal best in the Long Jump with a mark of 6.87.
Tomorrow, the Crimson and Gold Invitational opens with the Javelina throws team, as junior Katryna Hernandez and graduate student D.J. Delancy make the trip ahead of junior Bianca Cardenas and sophomore Blake Gordon competing in the pole vault. Additionally, Cody Fountain joins a talented 800 m field at the Harvey Dean Track as he looks to build upon a freshman campaign that concluded with a bronze finish at the league meet.
