Nieto, Hernandez place third at Crimson and Gold Invitational

Nieto took third in the pole vault, while Hernandez claimed bronze in the shot put.

PITTSBURG, Kan.- The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program completed competition at the Crimson and Gold Invitational on Saturday, with newcomer Thomas Nieto placing third in the pole vault and issuing the eight-best performance in school history. 
 
"It was a very good day overall," said coach Ryan Dall. "The guys in the heptathlon finished off great and everyone else had solid performances."
 
Nieto cleared a bar of 5.15m (16-10.75) on his second attempt to take the bronze while topping Bradley Jelmart of Arkansas State. Sophomore Blake Gordon joined Nieto in the event, placing eighth at 4.55m (14-11).
 
Also placing third, junior Katryna Hernandez launched the shot put 13.71m (44-11.75) on her last throw of the event to jump five spots up the leader board and reach the podium. 
 
Junior Jazmin Ray leapt to 11.46m (37-7.25) on her first attempt for a ninth-place finish in her debut, ahead of Madison Ramos who placed 14 in the high jump, clearing 1.59m (5-2.50) in what represented her first event for TAMUK.
 
The trio of graduate student Dean Wallace, sophomore Nathan Melton, and senior Roel De Leon wrapped up the Boo Rogers Combined Events, with Wallace setting a new personal best at 5,231, ranking him 10th in the nation. The Geronimo, Texas native picked up the bulk of his points in the pole vault, where he cleared a bar of 4.60m (15-1) en route to a sixth-place finish among NCAA Division I opponents. 
 
Meanwhile, Melton and De Leon finished back-to-back in 11th and 12th, with Melton at 4,741 and De Leon at 4,731, both personal records. 
 
Additionally, junior Bianca Cardenas competed in the pole vault, taking 12th at 3.33m (10-11).
