Javelinas fall to Chaps, 74-67

TAMUK drops last home game of the calendar year

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team lost its second game of the week on Saturday afternoon, falling to Lubbock Christian by a final score of 74-67.

"You know we are playing in probably one of the toughest stretches in our schedule," said head coach Johnny Estelle. "That's not an excuse for losing though because I hate losing. This was a very good team that was well coached, and we did not play well."

The loss drops the Javelinas record to 5-5 on the season and 1-3 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Chaps improve to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

The Chaps were led by the LSC's third highest scoring player in Rowan Mackenzie who posted a game-high 26 points while shooting 7 of 10 from the field and 9 of 11 from the line.

TAMUK's highest scorer on the afternoon was C.J. Smith who posted 15 points while Creighton Avery, Kavon Booker, and Jake Majors each recorded 10 total points in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Javelina's afternoon started strong, jumping out to an early 12-4 advantage in the first half, before the Chaps rattled off a 13-2 run taking the lead with 10:25 left in the first half.

The Chaps would not surrender the lead and go on to take a 35-32 lead into halftime after a back and forth first half.

LCU, would start the second half red hot, scoring its first four three-pointers of the half opening the lead to 10.

TAMUK however, struggled from the field shooting only 15.4% from beyond the arc and 44% overall in the second half.

The Javelinas were able to cut down the Chaps 15-point second half lead down to six at two different points in the second half, but eventually fell 74-67.

UP NEXT

TAMUK will now head to Puerto Rico for two games against Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras and Puerto Rico-Bayamon on Dec. 14 and 15.
