KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team will make its way to Canyon, Texas, to compete at the 2022 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship. The event is hosted by top-seeded West Texas A&M at The Box, with competition for the Javelinas beginning Thursday at 5 p.m. with a quarterfinal matchup against No. 4 Seeded UT Tyler.
Â
The No. 5 Seed Javelinas (20-9, 12-4 LSC) used an impressive back-half of the season, going 9-1 in their last 10 contests, as well as a perfect record at the Steinke Physical Education Center to cement their spot in the tournament. Additionally, this marks the second time in three seasons that the Javelinas have gone undefeated at home and is the first time since 2017 that the squad has eclipsed 20 wins.
Â
The Javelinas will faceoff with the No. 4 Seed Lady Patriots (19-8, 12-4 LSC), who enter the tournament on a four-game winning streak, last falling on Oct. 26, in a road matchup with UAFS. UTT got the better of TAMUK in a regular season matchup on Oct. 8, with the Lady Patriots snagging a four-set win at the Herrington Patriot Center.Â
Â
TAMUK enters the tournament leading the league in digs, kills, and assists while ranking inside the top 10 nationally in all major categories. The team's 18.64 digs per set are aided by senior Nicole Murff, who tops the conference and sits seventh on the national leader board with 587 on the season. The Lady Patriots, meanwhile, also post impressive numbers, including a .163 opponent hitting percentage and 13.56 kills per set.
Â
Additionally, the match will see offensive firepower from both sides as sophomore Ayanna Jackson and junior Jackie Alanis each average over three kills per set, with Jackson doing so at a .368 clip and pacing the squad in blocks with 99 on the year. For the Lady Patriots, Mikayla Ware is the LSC's top attacker, sitting third nationally in total attacks with 12.62 per set while recording 432 kills, the 10th-most in NCAA Division II.Â
Â
The winner will advance to a semifinal matchup, slated for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, ahead of the Championship Saturday at 4 p.m.Â
