Javelinas sweep Aggies for first 20-win season since 2017

TAMUK topped Cameron 25-15, 25-18, 26-24 to close out the regular season

LAWTON, Okla. — The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team swept Cameron on Saturday, taking the contest 25-15, 25-18, 26-24 in what represented the final contest of the regular season in Lone Star Conference action at the Aggie Gym.

The Javelinas (20-9, 12-4 LSC) bested the Aggies (5-26, 0-16 LSC), as the Javs secured their first 20-win season since the 2017 campaign that saw TAMUK go 21-12. Sophomore Ayanna Jackson played a significant role in the victory, as she dished out an incredibly efficient .609 hitting percentage that matches the fifth-best performance in school history with at least 20 attempts. Additionally, Jackson led the match with 15 kills.

Also topping the match, senior Nicole Murff dug 20 of the opposition's attacks, and sophomore Sydney Whitmire set the Javelinas up for success with 22 assists. In addition to her impressive defensive performance, Murff logged a pair of service aces, a category in which freshman Elisa Carli paced the team with three. Fellow newcomer Madelyn Wallace and senior Kailey Estrada each logged two blocks while totaling six kills apiece.

With the contest knotted at nine early in the first frame, TAMUK strung together a pair of points, thanks to an Aggie error and a Stiefer kill, for an 11-9 edge. Shortly after, a three-point swing featuring multiple Wallace kills, and an Estrada block resulted in a 15-11 Blue and Gold lead. CU scored two straight, prompting a five-score surge in which Wallace, freshman Rylan Pollard, and junior Jackie Alanis recorded kills, and Carli logged a service ace to put the Javs up seven. Leading 21-15, a Carli kill followed by back-to-back Murff aces and a successful Jackson attack secured a 25-15 set win.

Four of the first ten scores in the second came courtesy of Jackson, as she posted a quartet of kills en route to an 8-2 lead. CU answered with a five-point run that cut their deficit to one. Later in the set, with the Javelinas holding an 11-9 edge, consecutive Stiefer kills helped spark a six-score Blue and Gold surge. The Aggies again responded, taking seven of the following eight rallies to bring it back within two. TAMUK then held a 21-18 lead late in the set, prior to kills by Wallace, Estrada, and Jackson that helped the squad take the stanza 25-18.

Two more Jackson kills got the Javs started in the third before a four-score run featuring a Stiefer kill, an Alanis ace, and an Estrada termination resulted in a 9-3 lead. CU stormed back, using a five-point run to take a 14-12 lead. The Javs then took six of the subsequent seven rallies with a pair of Carli aces and kills from Jackson, Wallace, and Estrada, delivering an 18-15 lead. The Aggies strung together four straight to take a 24-23 edge late in the stanza, but a kill by Jackson and a pair of CU errors handed the Javelinas a 26-24 set win and the sweep.

Now that the regular season has concluded, the Javelinas await their seeding ahead of the 2022 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championships, which begins on Thursday, Nov. 10, at the site of the No. 1 seed.
