TAMUK men's basketball falls to Texas A&M Aggies in exhibition

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas fell in an exhibition game to the Texas A&M Aggies 90-47 in Reed Arena on Friday night.

"This is a very difficult game and difficult challenge," said head coach Johnny Estelle in regards to the team competing with nine newcomers this season. "At the end of the day, we have to gauge things off of did they compete? Did they fight? I'm proud of these young men. It takes a lot of courage to come up here to an SEC environment and team, it's humbling."

The Aggies started hot, shooting 4-6 from the field to start the game. Meanwhile, the Javelinas struggled offensively only shooting 2-11 from the floor to start the game.

A&M continued to roll going on a 12-0 run early in the first half to open a 24-6 lead. Javelina forward, Isaiah Payne snapped the run with a second-chance layup with 10:44 left in the first half.

Things would not get better over the next five minutes as the Aggies continued to stretch their lead 10 more points with little response from the Javelinas as the score stretched to 34-10 with five minutes remaining in the first half.

The first half would end with the Javelinas trailing by 30 points, 49-19. TAMU would end the first half shooting 60 percent from the field including 3-6 from beyond the arc.

For the Javs the first half was one of offensive struggle as the team went 8-32 from the field and were 0-10 from three-point range.

It would be more of the same in the second half as the Aggies continued to control the game. TAMU would lead 69-26 halfway through the second half, thanks in large part to a 16-2 run that lasted over a 6-minute stretch.

The run would be stopped as Jake Majors converted on a strong and-one at the rim near the ten-minute mark. Kendrick Washington would then convert the Javelinas' first three-pointer of the night on the team's next possession.

The Aggies would finish the game shooting 60 percent from the field led by Soloman Washington finished the game with 15 points and shooting an efficient 5-7 on the floor.

For TAMUK, senior Creighton Avery led the team with 10 total points on 4-9 shooting from the field while also leading the team in rebounds (6), assists (4), and steals (2).
