Javelinas to open LSC play against ASU & UTPB

TAMUK back on road to start conference play

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville's men's basketball team is on the road for the second straight week, as the team begins Lone Star Conference play. 

The Javelinas (4-2, 0-0 LSC) open conference play against Angelo State (3-1, 0-0 LSC) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before taking on UT Permian Basin (4-2, 0-0 LSC) on Saturday at 3 p.m. 

TAMUK enters the two games after going 1-1 last week in the Dacotah Bank Classic falling to host Northern State 95-88, before bouncing back for a 91-63 victory over Minnesota Crookston. 

In the win, the Javelinas were led offensively by Dillon Gooding, Sammy Brooks, and C.J. Smith who scored 18, 17, and 16 points respectively in the win. The Hogs' bench also thrived outscoring the Golden Eagles' 48-23 in the game. 

On the season, Kingsville is led offensively by guards Isaiah Payne and C.J. Smith, who are scoring 14.7 and 14.5 points per game, respectively. 

Payne made his first start as a Javelina this past Friday posting a season high, 26-points on 11-17 shooting from the field including 2-3 from beyond the arc. 

SCOUTING THE RAMS 

ASU, enters Thursday's contest on two consecutive wins against Arlington Baptist (99-67) and Sul Ross State (75-53). 

The Rams are led by a triple threat offensively including, Reggie Quezada, Kevon Godwin, and Fredelin De La Cruz who are averaging 10 or more points per game this season. Quezada is currently averaging 18.3 points per game, is sixth in the LSC in points per game and is shooting 52.7 percent from the field. 

De La Cruz has been a glass cleaning force this season averaging 9.8 rebounds per contest which is second in the LSC. 

SCOUTING THE FALCONS 

UTPB welcomes the Javelinas on Saturday coming off two home victories last weekend over Ecclesia, 93-86 (OT), and Jarvis Christian, 82-68. 

The Falcons bolster four players averaging over 10 points per game including Azariah Seay who is currently averaging 18.5 points per game which is fifth in the league. 

Seay has been fueled by DaJuan Jones who leads the Lone Star Conference in assists per game as he is averaging 5.3 per contest so far this season. 

As a team, the Falcons also lead the conference in free throws made per game with a mark of 24.7 which is also the second most in the nation.
