KINGSVILLE, Texas — On Saturday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team swept Texas Woman's 25-17, 25-14, 27-25 to earn a Senior Day victory in Lone Star Conference play inside of the Steinke Physical Education Center.
Â
"We hit for a really high percentage," said coach Tanya Allen-Gonzalez following the win. "They were commit-blocking to our outside hitters, which left our middles and rights one on one and they capitalized."
Â
The Javelinas (18-8, 10-3 LSC) knocked off the Pioneers (14-12, 5-9 LSC) with an incredibly efficient .385 hitting percentage and 45 terminations.Â
Â
The majority of the firepower came courtesy of sophomore Ayanna Jackson who recorded 13 kills at a .667 percent clip, and freshman Madelyn Wallace who logged 11 successful attacks with a .364 conversion rate.Â
Â
Assisting the offense, sophomore Sydney Whitmire had 26 assists and newcomer Elisa Carli 12, while three Javelinas boasted double-digit digs as sophomore Meghan Stiefer and junior Jackie Alanis each posted 10 and senior Nicole Murff recorded 12. Additionally, classmates Kailey Estrada, Alanis, and Jackson all recorded a pair of blocks.
Â
The first set began with an 8-8 tie before multiple Jackson kills and a Stiefer ace helped the Javs take five of the subsequent seven rallies. Later in the set and leading 15-13. Alanis and Estrada teamed up for a block prior to an Alanis ace that forced a TWU timeout. Following the break, the Pioneers snagged a point, but the Blue and Gold success continued with Stiefer and Jackson each posting kills and combining for a block en route to a 21—14 edge. Shortly after, a Wallace kill put the finishing touches on a 25-71 first-set win.
Â
After a 3-3 start in the second frame, four consecutive Blue and Gold points courtesy of a Jackson kill, an ace, and two TWU miscues handed the Javs a 7-3 lead. TWU trimmed their deficit to two before Estrada's two Stiefer kills and terminations, and senior Tammy Jo Grohman resulted in a 12-6 score line. Another four-score surge later in the set that saw a kill and block by Jackson stretched TAMUK's lead to 10, and a final kill by Estrada cemented a 25-14 set.
Â
The Pioneers kept battling in the third set as a back-and-forth battle ensued that saw the Javelinas up 24-22 thanks to a successful Jackson attack. TWU scored in back-to-back rallies forcing a win-by-two situation. The game remained knotted at 35 before a Grohman kill, and a Pioneer error resulted in a 27-25 win in the final frame.
Â
The Javelinas will return to the SPEC one last time as they invite St. Mary's for Faculty Appreciation Day, with the first serve set for 6 p.m. in Kingsville, Texas.Â
