KINGSVILLE, Texas – Sophomore Jackie Alanis' (McAllen, Texas) 18 kills and freshman Madeleine Stolzer's (San Antonio, Texas) 38 assists helped pave the way for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team in a 25-19, 25-21, 25-15 sweep of the Cameron Aggies on Friday night in Lone Star Conference action at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.
The Javelinas continue to stay hot in the early part of the season, upping their record to 6-0, the third time in program history they've reached that mark to begin a season.
For Alanis, her 18 kills matched her second-highest total of the season and her stat line also included a .387 hittting percentage, nine digs and a pair of aces. Stolzer's 38 helpers led all match participants and were the most by a Javelina in a three-set match since Casey Klobedans had 39 in a sweep of Cameron on Nov. 11th, 2017.
The list of contributors for the Blue and Gold also included freshman Ayanna Jackson (San Antonio, Texas), who hit .320 with 12 kills, and junior Nicole Murff (San Antonio, Texas), who logged a match-best 18 digs.
The Javelinas stole the first-set momentum with a 6-1 run that included two smashes from Jackson and changed the score from 6-5 to 12-6. The Aggies could never completely erase that lead, and while at one point, CU appeared to have closed to within 22-20, a challenge by TAMUK overturned the previous point to make the score 23-19. A CU attack error and a successful smack from Alanis provided the necessary points to cap the game.
The momentum switched sides multiple times in the second stanza. The frame began with Cameron taking a 6-2 lead, then the Javs went on a 9-2 run, only to watch their guests fight back to even the score at 12. Kills from Alanis and freshman Allison Stachowiak (Brownsville, Texas) gained TAMUK a little breathing room at 15-13 and the Javelinas used a 5-1 burst shortly after to increase their lead to five at 24-19. The Aggies stayed alive through a couple set points, but another shot by Alanis put the home team ahead, 2-0.
Five of the first seven points in the third set went to the Aggies, but it was all Blue and Gold after that, starting with four straight Javelina points that included two Alanis aces. After the teams exchanged rallies and the score reach 10-9 in favor of TAMUK, the Javs rattled off seven straight points in a run that included multiple kills courtesy of Jackson and Alanis. The Javelinas cruised the rest of the way and when Stachowiak sent one to the floor for the 25th point of the set, Tanya Allen's team had its sixth straight victory.
