KINGSVILLE, TEXAS –The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team swept the Midwestern State Mustangs, 25-17, 26-24, 25-20, at the Steinke Physical Education Center on Saturday with sophomoreÂ
Jackie Alanis (McAllen, Texas) and freshmenÂ
Allison Stachowiak (Brownsville, Texas) both reaching double figures in kills. Â
Â
The Javelinas outhit the Mustangs as a team, with Alanis leading the way for TAMUK with 11, connecting on over half of her total attacks, while Stachowiak terminated the ball ten times.Â
Â
No one compiled as many assists throughout the match as freshmanÂ
Sydney Whitmire (Tarkington, Texas), with 21 of her passes leading to points. Additionally, Whitmire tacked seven digs onto her stat line, with juniorÂ
Nicole Murff (San Antonio, Texas) leading in that category by recording 18. Offensively Murff logged three aces, pushing her team-leading total to 15 on the season.
Â
Other notable performances include juniorÂ
Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas), who earned six kills to go along with a match-best three blocks, and seniorÂ
Alexa Ruiz (Schertz, Texas) with eight digs.
Â
The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame, sitting at 7-4, before a four-point run by the Blue and Gold, courtesy of kills from Estrada, Whitmire, and Alanis, handed the Javelinas a one-point lead. The set became knotted at 10 apiece before the Javs won six out of seven subsequent rallies. From there, TAMUK never looked back with a Mustang blocking error securing the Javelina first-set victory.Â
Â
A back-and-forth second set saw Midwestern State string together three points to open things up before the Javelinas rallied to a 5-3 lead thanks to a pair of Stachowiak kills. Offensive miscues allowed the Mustangs to take a 7-5 advantage as the teams traded runs late in the set, resulting in a 24-22 Javelina lead. From there, a kill and an attack error knotted the set up at 24 each before attacks from seniorÂ
Kapri Pelle (Auburn, Calif.) and Stachowiak handed the Javelinas a 26-24 win.Â
Â
The third set began with the two teams trading blows until a 10-10 tie was interrupted by a five-point Blue and Gold run thanks to momentum from two of Murf's aces. The Javs kept their opponents at arms-length throughout the rest of the contest, with a solid five-point victory confirming the sweep.
Â
The Javelinas return to the SPEC on Saturday, Sep. 25, as they take on the Texas A&M International Dustdevils on Family Weekend.Â
