Javelinas fall to No. 11 Rambelles in LSC match

Ter Morsche lone holdout yet again in 6-1 loss

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program faced No. 11 Angelo State on Saturday in a rescheduled Lone Star Conference match and fell by a score of 6-1 at the ASU Tennis Courts.

Newcomer Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) was the lone holdout to secure a team point for the Javelinas (3-6, 0-2 LSC) as the Rambelles (9-3, 4-0 LSC) swept the doubles matchups before taking five of six in singles play.

Ter Morsche and fellow freshman Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) were the closest to winning their matchup in the third doubles pairing as they fell 6-3 to Maria Delgadillo and Anna Schneemann.

ASU took the top flight at 6-1 as Valentina Gonzalez and Ena Ovcina bested sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia). The second flight finished 6-2 in favor of Zoe Gubbels and Virginie Becht over the freshmen pair of Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India).

Like her match on Wednesday against St. Mary's, ter Morsche was the last to finish in singles play for the Javelinas. She clinched the first set over Becht at 7-5 and used a 7-5 super-tiebreaker win in the second set for a 7-6 final.

Alex Vishnevskaya started the team scoring for ASU as she took a straight-set victory over freshman Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) at 6-1 and 6-2. Gonzalez followed with a win in the top singles flight over Donkor at 6-3 and 6-2 to put the Rambelles on the brink of the win.

Delgadillo secured the team win in the third flight over Maier in consecutive sets after taking the first one at 6-4 and the second at 6-1. Gubbels grabbed a straight-set win over Zaffar in the fourth pairing, 6-2 and 6-3, while Ovcina bested Montalvo in the second matchup at 7-6 (7-5) and 7-5.

The Javelinas are back in action next week with an LSC matchup against Midwestern State on Thursday, April 8, in Wichita Falls, Texas.
