Javelinas fall to No. 17 Mustangs in LSC play

Second ranked opponent in as many matches for TAMUK

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Facing its second ranked opponent in as many matches, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program fell to No. 17 Midwestern State on Thursday at the MSU Tennis Center in the Lone Star Conference matchup at 7-0.

The Javelinas (3-7, 0-3 LSC) came within two points of avoiding the doubles sweep, while the Mustangs (10-5, 6-0 LSC) picked up consecutive-set wins in five of the six singles flights.

The newcomer duo of Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) and Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) were the last to finish in doubles play as they dropped a 6-4 decision to Ethne Dowling and Emily Ineson in the third flight.

The first tandem of sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) took on Tiffany Hollebeck and Casie Curry but ultimately fell 6-0. The second pairing of freshmen Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) ended up on the backend of a 6-2 decision to Anda Ghinga and Emilija Visic to wrap doubles play.

Hollebeck started the scoring for the hosts in the singles portion of the match as she downed Donkor in the top flight, 6-0 and 6-4. Ghinga was the next to finish as she bested Montalvo in the second matchup, 6-0 and 6-3.

The sixth flight of Knaab and Skylar Minns saw the Mustang officially clinch the match for MSU at 6-1 and 6-3. That was followed by the fourth pairing of Zaffar and Visic with the latter laying claim to the win at 6-4 and 6-1.

Dowling added a 6-2 and 6-3 win over ter Morsche in the fifth flight, while Maier and Curry battled it out over three sets to wrap up competition.

Maier took the first set at 6-3 before her opponent came away with the second set at 6-4. The decisive set ended up in favor of the Mustang at 10-8.

The Javelinas have a day off and return to action for their second road match of the weekend against DBU on Saturday, April 10, at the Arlington Tennis Center.
