CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team battled until the end in two matches on Saturday, but came up on the short end twice, first in a 3-2 loss to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, then in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on the final day of the Conni and Jay Wise Islander Classic at Water's Edge Park in Corpus Christi, Texas
TAMUK's record after 17 matches stands at 9-8.
TAMUK vs. SFA
The Javs and 'Jacks fought to a draw through four matches, with seniors Debra Rogers (Tulsa, Okla.) and Shelby Willliams (New Braunfels, Texas) getting the Blue and Gold on the board first in the second flight. Rogers and Williams were defeated in first set, but dominated the second and forged a comeback after trailing early in the third to lock up a 19-21, 21-5, 15-10 win.
The No. 3 match also belonged to the Javelinas in a 21-17, 21-18 sweep, courtesy of freshman Macie Satterwhite (Callisburg, Texas) and junior Tenley Housler (Bulverde, Texas). The decisive match ended up being the No. 1 flight, which went to a third set, but the clinching point went to SFA.
TAMUK vs. A&M-CC
The lone bright spot for the Javs against the Islanders was provided by their two freshmen in the No. 4 spot, Emily North (Red Oak, Texas) and Rylie Anderson (Justin, Texas). They pulled out a 25-23 nail-biter in the first frame and bounced back after a loss in the second to wrap the third set, 15-10. Unfortunately for the Javelinas, it would be the last flight they would win on Saturday.
The Javelinas will have the chance to bounce back on Friday, when they'll visit Baton Rouge, La., and compete in two matches on the first day of the Battle in the Bayou.
