Javelinas fall in season finale to Patriots

TAMUK awaits LSC Tournament to begin postseason play

TYLER, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program fell in its regular season finale to UT Tyler on Saturday at the Summers Tennis Center by a decision of 5-2 in the Lone Star Conference matchup.

The Javelinas (8-8, 5-4 LSC) had their five-match unbeaten streak snapped as the Patriots (12-4, 5-2 LSC) swept through doubles play before adding wins in four of the six singles flights.

Freshmen Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) and Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) faced Eva Riekenbrauck and Tanvikhaa Saravanan in the third doubles flight that went in favor of the Patriot pair at 6-3.

The newcomer duo of Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) fell by a similar score to Anna Claire Gerletti and Leony Deustchmann in the second tandem at 6-3.

The top billing of junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) forced an extra point against Chloe Chawner and Chloe Dix, but the UTT combo won out at 7-5 to flip the lineup over to singles play.

Saravanan took the top flight from Donkor in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-0, that pushed the lead to 2-0. They were followed by ter Morsche who put away the first team point for the visitors with a straight-set win over Riekenbrauck in the fifth matchup, 6-3 and 6-0.

Deutschmann added a consecutive-set victory over Montalvo in the second pairing, 6-2 and 6-1, to put the hosts on the brink of the win. The winning point came in the fourth matchup between Zaffar and Chawner as the Patriot added another straight-set win, 6-3 and 6-2, for the team decision.

Maier was the other Javelina to pick up a win in singles play as she came away with a decision in back-to-back-sets, 6-3 and 6-3, over Akshaya Suresh in the third flight. The sixth matchup between Knaab and Dix saw the former grab set one at 6-3 before the latter tied the matchup in set two at 6-2.

The three-set affair ultimately went in favor of Dix as she clinched the decisive set at 6-2.

The Javelinas now await their fate in the LSC Tournament scheduled to begin on April 29 in Waco, Texas.
