ARLINGTON, Texas – The first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament for the No. 45 Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team came to an end on Monday afternoon, when the fourth-seeded Javelinas were handed a 4-0 defeat by the top seed in the South Central Region, the No. 9 Angelo State Rambelles at the Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.
"I'm excited for what the future holds for this team," said coach Autumn Wollenzien. "Today was just the beginning. The 4-0 score doesn't reflect the work they put in today. They fought for every ball and point."
The Rams earned the day's first point by topping the Javelinas in doubles play. ASU won the third flight, 6-2, then secured the No. 2 match 6-1. Junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) had a lead in the top match, but, due to the other doubles contests ending first, it was left unfinished.
In singles play, ASU clinched the victory with three wins in straight sets. The Rams won the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-2, then secured the No. 1 flight by a 6-0, 6-3 margin. The match went final after the third flight ended, 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) put together TAMUK's best performance in the singles matches, winning the first set at No. 5, 6-1, and leading 5-2 in the second before the match came to end.
"We started the year out as a group of youngsters and finished as more mature ladies," said Wollenzien. "They kept making adjustments and implementing the lessons they learned from match-to-match. I can't be anything but proud of their fight. Each year, we just keep striving and getting better."
