Javelinas blank Falcons to wrap up road trip

TAMUK picks up wins in all nine matchups for second LSC win of the year

ODESSA, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program did not drop a single match to UT Permian Basin on Sunday at the Bush Tennis Center en route to a 7-0 sweep in the Lone Star Conference matchup.

"It's always nice to head home with a win under our belt," said head coach Autumn Wollenzien. "We are happy with the way everyone played today, and it helps to build confidence for the rest of our conference schedule."

The Javelinas (5-7, 2-3 LSC) had only two of the singles flights go to a decisive third set against the Falcons (4-13, 0-6 LSC) in the league match. Sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) started the run with a 6-4 win over Maria and Mariah Briones as the top tandem in doubles play.

Freshmen Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) and Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) followed up with a 6-2 win over Lore Mewis and Lea Mjertan in the second flight, while fellow newcomers Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) and Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) added a 6-4 win in the third doubles pairing.

Freshman Noemi Santa (Düsseldorf, Germany) kept momentum rolling for the visitors as she turned in a perfect showing in the sixth flight over Olga Guillamon at 6-0 and 6-0. Zaffar almost matched her classmate in the fourth flight for the third team point as she added a near-flawless, straight-set victory over Maria Briones at 6-0 and 6-1.

Maier secured the win for the Blue and Gold with a win over Mjertan in consecutive sets in the third matchup at 6-2 and 6-4. Donkor was the final Javelina to win her matchup in two sets with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 decision over Mewis in the top flight.

The fireworks in singles play came out of the last two matches to finish, with Montalvo and Krystal Smith going the distance in the second flight. Montalvo took the first set at 6-4 before Smith forced the decisive set at 7-5.

Montalvo won out convincingly for the Javelinas at 6-2 in the final set.

Ter Morsche dropped her first set at 6-4 to Monika Cantu but avoided the need for a super-tiebreaker in the second set with an identical 6-4 score in her favor. The final set saw ter Morsche post a 10-5 final over the Falcon, securing the team sweep.

The Javelinas are back at home next week for the final two home matches of the regular season, starting with a league matchup against UAFS on Friday, April 16, at 11 a.m. CT.
