Javelinas open home stand with sweep of UAFS

TAMUK takes four singles flights in straight sets for the win

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program opened up its final home stand with a 7-0 win over UAFS on Friday at the Javelina Tennis Courts in a Lone Star Conference matchup.

"It was a strong showing from everyone today," said head coach Autumn Wollenzien. "They were focused and aggressive, which is great at this time of year."

The Javelinas (6-7, 3-3 LSC) expedited doubles play with three straight decisions and added consecutive-set victories in four of the six singles flights for the win over the Lions (4-7, 0-6 LSC).

Freshmen Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) began the run for the hosts with a 6-2 win over Bianca Koen and Milen Achlamov in the second tandem. The two were followed by fellow newcomers Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) and Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) in the third matchup who turned in an identical 6-2 score over Chloe Ruppanner and Camila Romero.

Sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) concluded doubles play with a 6-3 win over Joanna Potet and Petra Csizmadia in the top flight to roll the lineup over to singles play.

Maier was the first to finish her singles matchup against Ruppanner as she turned in a 6-1, 6-4 win over the Lion for the second team point. She was followed by Donkor in the top pairing as the Javelina added a 6-3, 6-2 win over Koen to put the Blue and Gold on the brink of their third league win.

The win to put the hosts over the top came from ter Morsche who missed out on the flawless run against Romero in the fifth flight but still came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win over her foe.

The back half of the singles lineup saw two three-set wins and a super-tiebreaker win from Montalvo, Zaffar and freshman Noemi Sante (Düsseldorf, Germany). Sante was the first to finish as she took the first set, 6-2, but dropped the second set, 7-5, to Achlamov in the sixth pairing. In the end it was Sante who won out in the final set with a 10-6 decision.

Montalvo was the next to finish after she dropped the first set to Potet in the second matchup at 6-2 but battled back with a 6-0 win in the second set. The final set was clinched by Montalvo at 6-3.

Zaffar found herself up in the first set, 6-3, over Csizmadia and was locked in a 6-6 tie in the second set with her foe. The tiebreaker went in favor of Zaffar at 10-8, securing the team sweep.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday, April 17, against Cameron starting at 12 p.m. CT at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
