SAN ANTONIO - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program closed out the weekend trip to San Antonio with a 7-2 win over Trinity on Saturday at the Newman Tennis Center.
"Trinity was a very good team," said head coach Autumn Wollenzien, "and it was great to see us bounce back as a group today."
The Javelinas (2-3) secured the point advantage in doubles play after newcomers Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) and Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) won out in the super-tiebreaker to the Tigers' (2-4) Paulina Garcia and Elodie Richard in the third pairing and cruised to five points in singles play for the decision.
The TAMUK tandem was knotted with the Tiger duo, 7-7, before a 6-4 super-tiebreaker went in favor of Knaab and ter Morsche. Sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) took the first doubles point in the top pairing over Mary and Zoe Kaffen, 8-2.
Trinity secured the second doubles point with an 8-2 decision from Megan Flores and Catherine Cushing over the freshman pair of Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India).
Zaffar started the rally in singles play with a straight-set win over Mary Kaffen in the fourth flight, 7-5 and 6-1. She was followed by ter Morsche who downed Garcia in the fifth pairing in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1.
Donkor continued the trend with a straight-set win over Flores in the second matchup, 6-1 and 6-3, to secure the fifth team point of the match for the victory. That was followed by the lone singles point for the Tigers at the top flight with Zoe Kaffen taking a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Maier.
Knaab was the first of two Javelinas who went to a third set in their matchup, as she took the first set at 6-2 while Richard responded in kind in the second at 6-2. It was Knaab who stood alone after the decisive set, however, with a 6-1 decision in her favor.
Montalvo had the longest road to securing a team point as she faced Cushing in the third flight. She took the first set, 6-2, but Cushion came back in the second to force a super-tiebreaker at 12-10 for the set win at 7-6.
By the time the dust settled in their battle Montalvo stood alone as the third set went in her favor, 10-4.
The Javelinas return to action next week in Georgetown, Texas, with a matchup against Southwestern rescheduled from February 13. First serve is set for 5 p.m. CT on Thursday, March 11.
