Javelinas upend Pirates, 7-2

TAMUK picks up third win of the year in road match against Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program took on Southwestern on Thursday at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts and left with a 7-2 decision in the non-conference matchup.

"I'm happy with the way our team fought," said head coach Autumn Wollenzien. "It was a great match to prepare us for future tough opponents and opportunities."

The Javelinas (3-3) swept through doubles play against the Pirates (5-4) and quickly secured the first two singles flights to come away with the third win of the dual season.

Sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) started the scoring for the visitors with an 8-3 win over Taylor Despriet and Nina Mitrofanova in the top doubles pairing. The Blue and Gold duo were soon followed by newcomers Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) and Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) in the third matchup as they downed Alli Ziehm and Mariana Quetzeri at 8-5.

The freshman tandem of Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) completed the sweep in doubles play as they took down Esther Bowers and Nina Elez in the second matchup at 8-6.

Zaffar was the first to clinch a point for the Javelinas in singles play as she downed Despriet in the fourth flight in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1, while Maier secured the team win in the top billing with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set win over Mitrofanova.

The Pirates got the first of their two points in the fifth matchup, with Sydney Wahl taking a hard-fought decision over ter Morsche in straight sets, 7-6 and 6-0, despite the fist set going to super tiebreaker. The other point for the hosts came in the final flight to finish as Ziehm took consecutive sets from Knaab in the sixth pairing at 7-5 and 6-4.

Montalvo continued her string of wins as she pulled off a straight-set win over Elez in the third pairing, 7-6 and 6-2, in the second matchup to feature a super tiebreaker. Donkor closed out the scoring for TAMUK in another straight-set decision over Bowers in the second flight, 7-6 and 6-2.

The Javelinas have one final non-conference matchup on their schedule as they visit San Antonio on Sunday, March 14, to square off with Division I foe Air Force before the start of the lengthy Lone Star Conference schedule.
