Berg, Housler break program record for career wins

Javelinas drop matches to Tulane, Spring Hill

NEW ORLEANS – Juniors Macy Berg (San Antonio, Texas) and Tenley Housler (Bulverde, Texas) combined for a victory that was the 56th in the careers of both players, breaking the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball program record for career wins on a day in which the Javelinas were handed their first two losses of the year, 5-0 to the Tulane Green Wave and 4-1 to the Spring Hill Badgers on the first day of the Bayou Beach Duals in New Orleans in Friday.

"We had a few too many unforced errors early in sets today," said coach Tanya Allen, "which led to passive play to end each set. Knowing when and how to attack can be difficult, but they are learning.

"We have a lot of new faces to the lineup and I think we are still trying to figure out our identity as a team. Overall, I know they have a lot more in them and we will continue to improve."

TAMUK vs. Tulane

The Green Wave defeated the Javelinas in straight sets in the Javs first loss of 2021. Tulane won the fifth flight, 21-15, 21-14 and took the No. 4 match, 21-17, 21-16. A 21-11, 21-9 triumph in the third contest secured the match for the home team and they added one more at No. 1, 21-13, 21-13. Seniors Debra Rogers (Tulsa, Okla.) and Shelby Williams in the second flight came the closest to springing an upset, but ultimately fell, 21-17, 21-18. The Green Wave also collected the No. 6 match, 21-14, 21-19.

TAMUK vs. Spring Hill

The bright spot of the day for the Javs came in the third flight in their second match. Berg and Housley outfought their opponents for a narrow, 22-20, 21-19 sweep that put each student-athlete at 56 career wins. This broke the school record held by former Javelina Haley Hutchinson, who amassed 55 from 2017-19. Said Allen: "I'm so proud of Macy and Tenley for their amazing accomplishment."

Unfortunately this was the only triumph of the match for TAMUK in a 4-1 defeat.

The Javs have one more chance to earn a win in New Orleans and it will come on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., when they take on Louisiana-Monroe.
