Javelinas drop 5-1 decision to Air Force

Montalvo picks up straight-set win in singles play for lone team point

SAN ANTONIO - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program wrapped up the non-conference portion of the schedule on Sunday with a 5-1 loss to Division I foe Air Force in a neutral-site match in San Antonio.

The Javelinas (3-4) dropped the doubles point to the Falcons (8-2) before junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) picked up the lone team point in the third singles flight.

Meredith Jones and Ksenia Vasilyev ended up with the decision in the first doubles pairing with a 6-4 decision over Montalvo and sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.). The point was officially secured after Alex Kuo and Isabella Flodin downed the newcomer tandem of Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) in the second matchup, 6-2.

Jones added another point in the top singles flight as she took a straight-set win over Maier, 6-4 and 6-2. Mebeli Becerra tabbed a similar finish in the fourth matchup over Zaffar, 6-1 and 6-2, while Hailey Stelse downed freshman Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) in the fifth spot, 6-2 and 6-0.

Flodin added another point for AFA in the sixth flight as she took down newcomer Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) in consecutive sets, 7-5 and 6-2.

Montalvo's effort in the third flight staved off the shutout for the Blue and Gold after she clinched the first set against Shailla Alda at 7-6 with a 6-3 win in the super tiebreaker, while the second set went in at 6-3 in favor of the Javelina to wrap competition.

With the non-conference schedule out of the way, the Javelinas turn their attention to Angelo State for the first Lone Star Conference matchup set for Saturday, March 20, in San Angelo, Texas, starting at 1 p.m. CT.
