Javelinas close out regular season with games against UT Tyler

TAMUK makes a road trip for matchup on Wednesday, February 24, before returning home on Saturday

KINGSVILLE, Texas - With one final week of the regular season left to play, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program takes to the road for a matchup against UT Tyler on Wednesday, February 24, before returning to the Steinke Physical Education Center on Saturday, February 27, for the season finale.

Tip off is set for 5 p.m. CT at the Louise Herrington Patriot Center in Tyler, Texas.

The Javelinas are coming off a three-week hiatus that saw three matches canceled due to the inclement weather that wreaked havoc across the state of Texas recently. The last time the Blue and Gold took to the floor was against St. Edward's on February 4 and February 6 that saw the Hilltoppers hand out losses in both games.

The 6-8 record for TAMUK features junior Brianna Pena (Weslaco, Texas) as the lone Javelina who has started all 14 games while putting away a 14.2 scoring average while shooting 46.4% from the floor.

Classmate Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas) is right behind with a 9.8 scoring average and a 3.2 rebounding average with a 35.7% shooting clip in 12 games. Freshman Janessa Payne (Aledo, Texas) rounds out the trio with an 8.3 scoring and 4.8 rebounding average with a blistering 45.8% shooting rate from beyond the arc.

Senior Anastacia Mickens (Beaumont, Texas) has stepped up as the Javelinas' leading rebounder as she pulls in 5.6 per game and has tossed in five points per outing behind her 36.8% average.

The Patriots are still searching for their first win of the season as they sit winless through 12 games with the most recent coming against Texas A&M International in a 98-60 loss on February 21 in Laredo, Texas.

Taylor Jackson has been the leading scorer for UTT, averaging 9.6 a game on a 41.0% clip through nine appearances, while Shala Robinson has seen the most action with nine starts and time on the floor in all 12 games for a 5.9 scoring average.

Kelsey Crouse has done the most work in the paint as she currently averages 7.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest with eight starts on the year. As a team the Patriots are averaging 44.9 points per contest while opponents have scored 71.7 on average.
