Javelinas head to San Antonio for St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic

TAMUK takes on Minnesota State and East Central in pair of neutral-site games

THE MATCHUP    
• The Javelinas visit Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio for the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic
• TAMUK squares off with Minnesota State on November 26 at 2 p.m. CT before it faces East Central on November 27 at 2 p.m. CT
• The Javelinas are fresh off a 66-56 win over Western Oregon in the midweek matchup
• Minnesota State is 3-0 after opening up its NSIC schedule with a win over Concordia-St. Paul
• The Mavericks also defeated Bethany Lutheran and UW Parkside
• MSU is led by Joey Batt who owns a 23.0 scoring average at a 53.8% clip
• Four Mavericks total are averaging double digits in scoring, with Destinee Bursch (13.0), Taylor Theusch (12.7) and Tayla Stuttley (10.3) all part of the group
• East Central is 2-0 on the year after opening up its season with wins over Texas Woman's and UAFS
• Madison Rehl is the leading scorer at 16.0 per game on a 70.0 rate
• Izzy Cummins and Alexis Lyons are right behind her with identical 11.5 scoring averags
• Mackenzie Crusoe pulls double duty with eight points and seven rebounds per game
• As a team, ECU is averaging 80.5 points while opponents are at 52 points per game

Last Time Out    
• The Javelinas defeated Western Oregon in a midweek, non-conference matchup at the Steinke Physical Education Center on November 24
• Anastacia Mickens set a new personal-best with 24 points in the win as she added eight rebounds and four steals
• Kryslyn Jones added 13 points off the bench along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals
• TAMUK built up a double-digit lead by halftime and extended it to 14 points in the third before holding on for the win

Texas Two-Step    
• Anastacia Mickens put up 24 points, a new career-high, in a 66-56 win at home against Western Oregon on November 24
• It is the most points by a Javelina in a game since Cloe Lane put up 25 in a 66-65 loss to Texas Woman's on February 7, 2019
• Only two Javelinas surpassed 20 points in a game in the 2020-21 season
• Brianna Pena did it first with 21 points in a 74-65 loss to West Texas A&M on January 22
• Mia Cherry put away the second with 20 points in a 78-70 win over Cameron on January 30

Blanked    
• The Javelinas held Chadron State to zero points in the third quarter en route to a 58-51 win on November 12 to open the season
• It is the first time ever the Javelinas held their opponents to zero points in a quarter since the NCAA shifted to the quarter format ahead of the 2015-16 season
• Since head coach Michael Madrid took over, the Javelinas have held their opponents to fewer than 10 points in a quarter 29 times
• The previous lowest output allowed by TAMUK with Madrid at the helm came in the 2019-20 season when they limited St. Mary's to two points in the first quarter on January 18
• The Javelinas also held Midwestern State to two points in the third quarter in the 2016-17 season on February 2

Bring 'Em Back    
• Pena leads a group of 10 returners for the 2021-22, one year after being named All-LSC second team
• Pena led the Javelinas with a 14.2 scoring average while shooting 46.4% from the floor, the highest scoring output by a member of the Blue and Gold since Felicia Soza averaged 15.6 in 2009-10
• Cherry's All-LSC honorable mention season came courtesy of 9.8 points per game while shooting 35.7% from the field as she appeared in 12 games
• Payne's All-Freshman campaign was on the heels of a 8.4 scoring rate with a 44.6% clip from beyond the arc
• Anastacia Mickens returns as the lone senior, while sophomore Maeghan Palmer is back for her third year in the Blue and Gold
• The remaining freshman who returned include Mia Rivers, Annelise Dominguez, Devon Williams, Veyda Lake and Jayde Tschritter
