Javelina football picks up win over Western New Mexico; women’s cross country competed at LSC Championships

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's cross country program wrapped up its regular season at the Lone Star Conference Championships over the weekend, while the football program picked up its fourth win of the 2021 campaign following a trip to Western New Mexico.

For their efforts in leading the Javelinas, freshman Odette Fernandez (Grulla, Texas) and redshirt sophomore Zadock Dinkelmann (Somerset, Texas) were named IBC Bank Players of the Week.

Fernandez led the way for the Javelinas in the women's 6k at the LSC Championships in Lawton, Okla., with a 60th-place finish and a time of 25:12.28 in the event. The team finished 15th overall at the Big Green Soccer Complex hosted by Cameron with a point total of 393.

On the year, Fernandez added a ninth-place finish in the OLLU Invitational on October 9 with a 6k personal-best time of 23:38.1 while guiding the Javelinas to a fifth-place finish as a team. It was two weeks removed from another personal-best time in the 5k at the Texas A&M Invitational on September 25 at 20:11.5 that earned her LSC Freshman of the Week honors.

Dinkelmann guided a Javelina offense that produced three rushing touchdowns and a scoring strike through the air in a 28-19 win over Western New Mexico. He found redshirt senior Ryan Martinez (Kingsville, Texas) for four yards in the back of the end zone midway through the opening quarter for the first touchdown of the game and second of the season for either Javelina.

He finished with 207 yards through the air on a 14-for-24 completion rate, leading the Hogs to a 4-3 record for the first time since the 2016 season.

The Javelina football program returns home this week for the Homecoming White Out against West Texas A&M on Saturday, October 30 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium. The Javelina women's cross country program next competes at the NCAA South Central Regional hosted by Lubbock Christian on November 6.
