Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – Sparked by 21 kills from freshman Ayanna Jackson (San Antonio, Texas), the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team notched their second consecutive win, a 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23 triumph over the St. Edward's Hilltoppers in Lone Star Conference action on Wednesday night at the Recreation and Convocation Center in Austin, Texas.
The Javelinas have now started the season 2-0 for the second consecutive season and they're 2-0 in LSC play for the second time in three seasons, while SEU drops to 0-2.
"We put a lot of emphasis on our offense," said coach Tanya Allen. "We really wanted to execute our sets. Roxanne [Morris] was thrown into the setting position last-minute and she struggled a little bit yesterday, but she really stepped up today and was able to deliver a better ball, which helped our hitters get kills quicker."
Jackson's 21 smashes match TAMUK's season-high from a year ago and she reached that number while committing only three errors for a .486 hitting percentage. Her three total blocks also tied for a team-high.
Senior Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) led the squad in assists with 32, while freshman Madeleine Stolzer (San Antonio, Texas) pitched in with 16. Morris was also one of four Javelinas in double-digits in digs, tallying 15. Junior Nicole Murff (San Antonio, Texas) topped TAMUK's leaderboard in that stat with 22, followed by sophomore Kelsi Luckenbach's (Calallen, Texas) 16. Sophomore Jordan Schenkel (San Antonio, Texas) added 10 scoops.
The match's early momentum belonged to the Hilltoppers in the form of an 8-4 advantage, but the Javelinas then registered 12 of the next 15 points to grab the lead, 16-11. The closest SEU could get after that was three points and a rocket off the arm of junior Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas) counted the final point of the frame.
In the second game, the Javs never trailed on their way to a 2-0 lead. With the score at 13-12, a smash by Jackson sparked a run of six consecutive points that also included two rejections and another kill by the freshman. The home team got as close as three points, but Jackson's ninth finisher of the evening sealed the set for the visitors. TAMUK held their opponents to a .049 hitting percentage during the second stanza.
Neither side led by more than three at any point in the third, but a stretch in which the Javs outscored the Hilltoppers, 6-3, put them ahead 19-16. Five of the next six points went to SEU, however, and after the Javelinas tied the score at 21, the Hilltoppers reeled off three more points to move to set point. Two rallies later, an attack error by TAMUK pushed the match to a fourth set.
With the score 9-8 in favor of the home side, a kill courtesy of freshman Allison Stachowiak (Brownsville, Texas) helped ignite a 9-4 run which included a pair of finishers from Morris and Jackson and put the Blue and Gold ahead, 17-13. The Hilltoppers battled back to tie three times, the last of which was at 23 thanks to a Kaitlyn Krafka kill, but that's where SEU's comeback ended. Consecutive attack errors from the Hilltoppers sealed the deal and the Javs had another win.
