RICHARDSON, Texas (LSC/TAMUK) - The Lone Star Conference announced the recipients of the 2019-20 Scholar-Athlete award in a release on Tuesday, with 32 student-athletes representing 17 of the league's 19 institutions following the conclusion of the shortened spring season.
Senior
Madeleine Maltais (Corpus Christi, Texas) and redshirt junior
Joseph Partida (San Benito, Texas) were the two honored from Texas A&M-Kingsville. Maltais was recently named Academic All-District by CoSIDA for District 6 after compiling a perfect 4.0 GPA. For the track and field program, she rewrote the record book in the javelin after her mark of 46.08m (151-2) at the 2019 David Noble Relays in San Angelo, Texas, brought home a silver medal in the event while going in as the best mark in program history.
Partida was named the 2019-20 Fred McIntire award winner by the Javelina Athletic Department after playing in 19 games the past three years for the football program. He helped pave the way for the one-two punch of Nick Pelrean and Jeff Carr in 2018 as well as seniors
Luis Lopez (San Diego, Texas) and
Kris Barnes (Fort Worth, Texas) in 2019. He also started the game against Tarleton on October 26, 2019, that saw senior
Koy Detmer Jr. (Somerset, Texas) throw for 450 yards, seven short of the program record, as well as set a new program mark in completions with 37 and tie the record for attempts with 65.
Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete award to one male and one female student-athlete at member institutions. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship, and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year.
To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class. Besides representing 17 of the league's member institutions, the recipients represent 17 of the 18 sports that are sponsored by the conference. Football and softball had the most scholar-athletes with five each, while women's soccer had three. Baseball, volleyball and women's golf each had two.
The 2019-20 Scholar-Athletes led their respective teams to a pair of conference championships, one divisional title and one tournament crown. Texas is home to 22 of the recipients, with two from Arkansas and Minnesota, along with one each from Arizona, Oklahoma, British Columbia, Denmark, Gambia, and Germany.
