Javelinas start Florida Trip with sweep of Northwood

TAMUK falls one matchup shy of perfect showing at USTA National Campus

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program started off the trip to Florida with a dominant showing on Sunday with a clean sweep of Northwood at the USTA National Campus at 7-0.

"We knew this team was going to give us competition in singles," said head coach Autumn Wollenzien, "so it was important to get a great start with doubles and take the momentum into singles. We did just that and we came away with a win."

The Javelinas (4-2) took the doubles point in the second and third matchups, and didn't drop a set in the singles portion of play to take the win over the Timberwolves (6-10).

Junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and senior Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) started the run with a perfect 6-0 showing against Paula John and Anna Goncharova in the third tandem. The doubles point was secured by sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and senior Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol Crimea, Russia) shortly after as the duo downed Iryna Trystan and Ekaterina Vorobeva in the second flight at 6-1.

The Timberwolves slipped past the Javelinas in the top doubles matchup, as newcomer Franka Sindicic (Zagreb, Croatia) and senior Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) fell 6-2 to Kate Berestovenko and Elizaveta Velichko to roll the match over to the singles portion of play.

Sindicic secured the second team point with the third win of her career for the Blue and Gold as she downed John in the fifth flight in straight sets at 6-3, 6-1. Ruiz put the Javelinas on the cusp of the win as her 7-5, 6-1 showing against Trystan in the fourth pairing for the third team point.

Montalvo pushed TAMUK over the top in the third matchup as she downed Vorobeva in consecutive sets at 6-1, 7-5, to secure the win.

Romanovskaia needed a super tiebreaker in the first set against Berestovenko in the top flight, with her 7-6 decision secured by the extra portion of play, but she stormed to a 6-0 win in the second set to earn the five point for the Javelinas.

Baerman was the penultimate member of the team to finish, doing so in straight sets against Goncharova in the sixth matchup at 6-2, 6-4, for a 6-0 score. Donkor was the final Javelina to secure the point as she, too, needed the super tiebreaker in one of her sets. She bested Velichko in the first set, 6-2, and won out in the second at 7-6 following the super tiebreaker portion of play.

The Javelinas remain on the road in Florida as they travel to Lakeland, Fla., on Tuesday, March 10, to take on Quincy at 11 a.m. CT.
