LAKELAND, Fla. – Senior
Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) made history on Tuesday for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program as she compiled two wins across her doubles and singles matches to lead the team to a 7-0 win over Quincy at Lakeland Beerman to wrap up the road trip on a high note.
With her two decisions, Ruiz becomes the first student-athlete in program history to reach 100 wins in a career as the Javelinas (5-2) never dropped a set en route to a clean sweep of the Hawks (3-4).
"Valerie [Ruiz] has been a great example of what a Javelina tennis player is," said head coach
Autumn Wollenzien. "She is competitive, focused, and strives to be the best teammate she can be. Her teammates love her because she give 100 percent in everything and she works hard in the classroom and on the court.
"From last year, where she earned the sportsmanship award [from the Lone Star Conference], to her 100th win this year, it says a lot about her character. She has been a pleasure to coach and I'm proud to have coached and witnessed her journey these four years."
Ruiz teamed up with junior
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) in the doubles portion and turned in a 6-1 win over Marta Caballero Garcia and Abby Moore for career win no. 99. Their win in the second tandem was followed by identical 6-0 wins in the third and first pairings as the freshman duo of
Franka Sindicic (Zagreb, Croatia) and
Daniela Koleva (Kocani, North Macedonia) outpaced Annie McGinnis and Noni Updyke in the former, while the senior tandem of
Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) and
Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) downed Makaela Hampton and Nicole Lao in the latter.
Coincidentally, Ruiz was the last Javelina to secure a win in the singles portion of play as she took a 6-4, 6-1 win over Caballero Garcia in the third matchup for her 100th career win. She currently stands 6-1 in the dual season in singles play with her lone loss coming in the matchup to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on February 6.
Her doubles partner, Montalvo, started the run in singles play as she never dropped a point to Moore in the fourth pairing at 6-0, 6-0, for a 2-0 Javelina lead. She was followed by Sindicic in the fifth flight who turned in a 6-0, 6-2 win over McGinnis to put TAMUK on the cusp of a perfect Florida trip.
Romanovskaia secured the second team win of the trip in the top flight with a 6-2, 6-0, straight-set win over Lao, and was mirrored by Baerman in the sixth matchup shortly after with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Updyke.
Sophomore
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) was the fifth Javelina to turn in a team point as she went 6-1, 6-0 over Hampton in the second pairing prior to Ruiz putting away the sweep of the Hawks.
"Overall, the ladies were excited to play today," added Wollenzien. "It helped to have a goal in mind and [Valerie]'s accomplishment gave us some momentum."
The Javelinas return to Texas this week and will head to San Antonio this weekend to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Championships hosted by St. Mary's starting on March 13.
